ITS HISTORY
Fortaleza owes its name to "Fort Schoonenborch",
built in 1649 on the banks of Rio Pajeú's. Still
in the year of its foundation, the Fort received the name
"Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora de Assunção".
On April 13, 1726, the town which grew around the Fort was
elevated to becoming a Village. In the same year, indigenous
attacks on Aquiraz, the first headquarters of the Captaincy
of Ceará, permitted Fortaleza to assume the role
of Capital. As of 1866, cotton export in Ceará to
England, provided the beginning of its development.. With
a main port , the city, indeed, began to put in practice,
its role of a political and economical center. During this
time, railroads were implanted to facilitate the flow of
products to the outlet port. At the turn of the XIX century,
Fortaleza was already the seventh urban population of the
country.
THE CITY
Equipped with a complete infrastructure to take advantage
of all of the natural beauties and tourist attractions,
Fortaleza possesses one of the three intelligent airports
of the country, the International Airport “Pinto Martins”,
which has the capacity to receive 2,5 million passengers
a year in comfort. The highways are in excellent condition
facilitating the access to the beaches, mountains and countryside.
The net of hotels of the city has more than 1000 establishments
making it one of the best in the north and northeast of
the country.
GASTRONOMY
Fortaleza/Ceará transmits the flavor of lobster,
shrimp, fish, sun-dried meat and many other delights. It
has the colors of tropical fruits like cashew, coconut,
mango and guava. You can savor all these delicacies in an
enormous variety of bars and restaurants located along Beira
Mar Avenue where all of these wholesome dishes are prepared
with the greatest of care for lucky tourists.
