Surge protection on pipeline insulating joints with cathode protection.

Wagner Barbosa - Engineer

Resume Summary: Graduated from PUC-Minas as an Electrical Engineer; 22 years experience in electricity at companies such as Tesla, Santa Barbara Engineering, Mapress and presently at CLAMPER, working on telecommunications and energy projects development, buildings electric projects, product development in the area of electrical transient surge protection, management and technique in general. He is a Member of the Brazilian Electricity Committee and an active participant in working groups for the development of technical standards in the area of protection against electrical surges.

Contents Summary: In recent years, the scientific Community has discussed a lot about the impacts of global warming. Amongst the changes already observed, the "ceraunica" has increased its activity, particularly in the tropics. Transport companies and fluids distribution of any kind, which have buried metallic pipes with cathode protection, have had problems such as carbonization of insulation joints due to direct lightning strikes near or in the ducts. Considering the lack of standards, with procedures and recommendations for application of surge protection devices for pipelines, this essay aims to present practical studies concerning the duct pattern supportability used in the distribution of natural gas, when subjected to impulse voltages, present the different technologies that can be used for surge protection of insulation joints as well as basic installation procedures to ensure the efficiency of lightning protection.
