Interactions between corrosion and tribological processes lead to premature damage in engineering and medical components. To fully understand tribocorrosion – the degradation caused by such interactions – an integrated approach where corrosion and tribological processes are considered is needed. In this conference two applications in which tribocorrosion causes particular durability issues are considered; hip joint replacements and piping in oil and gas recovery. These are two very different applications but there is much to unify them in terms of the principles of material degradation. The paper will present some recent results from in-situ electrochemical measurements in a hip wear simulator and in an erosion-corrosion impinging jet apparatus and the approach to understand the electrochemical and mechanical interactions will be discussed.
