SUMMARY:

Oil and gas industry is striving to reach “zero failure” and is not comfortable in any other target. In order to realistically achieve this target several activities, involving many equipment and persons, must be carried out in a coordinated manner. Some activities include selection of material appropriate to the given environment, estimation of the rate at which the material would corrode in that given environment, establishment of corrosion allowance (i.e., material wall thickness), decision on whether corrosion mitigation strategies are required, implementation of corrosion mitigation strategies (pigging, addition of corrosion inhibitors, and biocides), installation of monitoring techniques, implementation of maintenance activities, and establishment of frequency in which mitigation, monitoring, inspection, and maintenance activities should be carried out, .

In order to ensure that these activities are carried out of effectively, economically, and on time, the corrosion management system is necessary. Corrosion management provides vital and seamless link between top-down corporate management approach and bottom-up corrosion professional approach. Corporate management prefers top-down approach (risk-avoidance, goal-based, financial-oriented) to minimize the risk from corrosion. On the other hand, corrosion professional estimates risk in bottom-up approach (field-experience, fact-based, technical-oriented). The success of corrosion management system lies directly on how it balances the corporate management and corrosion professionals’approaches and the success of corrosion management will determine if the industry can realistically attain “zero failure”.

This paper describes the roles and responsibilities of typical corrosion management system using controlling internal corrosion of the oil and gas production infrastructures as an example.
